It's important to start prepping for the ISEE as soon as possible as it is one of the more rigorous of the standardized tests. It contains multiple choice sections in Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Mathematics Achievement. There is also an essay, which is not scored, but is sent to the schools to which you apply. The Upper Level test is for applicants in 9th grade and above. The Middle Level test is for applicants in 7th and 8th grades. The Lower Level test is for applicants to 5th and 6th grades. The same sections appear on all three levels, but of course, the levels of difficulty vary between levels.

Towards the end of each section of the exam, the questions become significantly more difficult, and may be material that your child has not seen before at their grade level. As a result, it’s important to expose your child to more difficult levels of math and ELA (such as algebra for a fifth grader) so that they are able to work through the problems.

Additionally, the essay portion of the ISEE is submitted directly to the school being applied to, which means that the school will receive an unedited version of your child’s writing. Preparing your child for proper essay writing, sentence structure, and grammar is key to performing successfully on the ISEE.
